Lake Annie

Lake Annie is a 'ridge' type lake located south of Lake Placid on Archbold Biological Station property.  Lakewatch sampling began on this lake in November 2000 and therefore very limited data are available.  Water quality in Lake Annie is very good for a ridge type lake.  Phosphorus levels range from 3 to 15 ppb (parts per billion) and average only 7 ppb.  Nitrogen levels are also low, ranging from 200 to 550 ppb and averaging 380 ppb.  Low nutrient levels have resulted in low algae levels and high water clarity.  Algae levels, as measured by chlorophyll concentrations, range from 2 to 21 ppb and average 5 ppb.  As a result of low levels of algae, water clarity, as measured by the depth to which a standardized 'secchi' disc can be seen when lowered into the water, is quite good.  Secchi depths range from 2.5 to 15.5 feet and average 9 feet deep, making Lake Annie one of the the clearer lakes in the county.  An increase in phosphorus in late 2002 led to an algae bloom on the lake that reduced water clarity through November, though conditions appeared to be improving by December 2002.  Another bloom occurred during 2003, though to a lesser extent than in 2002.  Click here to view water quality graphs by year.
