Lake Anoka

Lake Anoka is a deep, sandy bottomed 'ridge' type lake located next to US 27 in Avon Park.  Based on Lakewatch data, water quality in Lake Anoka is good for a lake of this type, with typical fluctuations in nutrient and algae populations.  However, data collection on this lake only began in mid-1999 and therefore no long term trends can be evaluated for this lake.  Total phosphorus values are well within expected ranges for a ridge lake, ranging from 4 to 14 ppb (parts per billion) and averaging 6 ppb.  Nitrogen levels are also quite low, ranging from 300 to 710 ppb and averaging 500 ppb.  Algae levels, as measured by chlorophyll concentration, are quite low as a result of low nutrient levels.  Chlorophyll values range from 2 to 5 ppb and average only 3 ppb.  Low levels of algae in a sandy bottomed lake result in a high degree of water clarity, as measured by the depth to which a standardized 'secchi' disc can be seen when lowered into the water.  Secchi depths range from 7 to 17 feet and average 13 feet - making this lake among the clearest in the county.  There are no water quality concerns based on available data.
