Lake Grassy
Lake Grassy is a very clear, deep, sandy-bottomed ridge type lake located to the south of the Town of Lake Placid on the east side of US 27. Water quality, based on Lakewatch data, is very good in Lake Grassy, showing only natural fluctuations in nutrient and algae levels, while water clarity increased considerably during the drought of early 2001. Phosphorus levels range from 5 to 18 ppb (parts per billion) and average only 8.6 ppb. Nitrogen levels are also very low, ranging from 430 to 1280 ppb, averaging 630 ppb. Algae populations, as measured by the concentration of chlorophyll in the water, increase and decrease as nutrient levels increase and decrease. Chlorophyll concentrations range from 1 to 10 ppb and average 3.5 ppb. Water clarity declines when algae increases and is measured as the depth to which a standardized 'secchi' disc can be seen when lowered into the water. Secchi depths range from 7 to 23 feet, averaging 11 feet, making Lake Grassy among the clearest lakes in the county. Click here to view water quality data by year.
