Lake June

Lake June is a large, deep, sandy-bottomed, clear ridge type lake located to the northwest of the Town of Lake Placid and just west of US 27.  Water quality in Lake June is good, based on Lakewatch data, though there is heavy development pressure in the watershed since the lake is surrounded by homes and highways.  The new Lake June in Winter Scrub State Park on the west side of the lake will relieve much of the future development potential.  Phosphorus levels range from 4 to 22 ppb (parts per billion) and average only 12 ppb.  Nitrogen levels are also generally low, ranging from 280 to 990 ppb and averaging 556 ppb.  Algae populations, as measured by the chlorophyll concentration in the water, are quite low as a result of the low nutrient levels in the lake.  Chlorophyll levels range from 3 to 26 ppb and average only 10 ppb.  Water clarity, as measured by the depth to which a standardized 'secchi' disc can be seen when lowered into the water, is good in Lake June.  Secchi depths range from 3 to 13.2 feet and average a healthy 7.3 feet.  Water quality appeared to decline somewhat during 1998 and 1999, but nutrient levels and chlorophyll content dropped considerably during 2000 and levels remained low through at least March of 2002.  Homeowners in the Lake June watershed, especially those on lakefront property, should carefully manage nutrients and pesticides applied to lawns, have their septic tanks pumped every 3 to 5 years and should maintain some aquatic vegetation on at least half of their beaches.  Future investigations may include a study of the impact of stormwater and septic tanks on the lake.  Lake June is currently included in the investigation conducted through the Central Sewer Study Committee.  Click here to view water quality data by year.

There are two boat ramps on Lake June, both in the lobe on the northeast end of the lake.  One ramp is on the north side of this lobe, located at Bishop Park, which is also the location of the lake's public swim beach.  The other ramp is on the south side of this lobe, located at the Lake June Point park.
