Lake Mary Jane

Lake Mary Jane is a small sandy bottomed ridge type lake.  Based on the limited Lakewatch data collected in 2003, water quality in Lake Mary Jane fluctuates considerably.  Phosphorus levels are low to moderately high, ranging from 8 to 57 ppb (parts per billion) and averaging 20 ppb.  Nitrogen levels in a lake of this type are expected to from from 400-800 ppb, but in Lake Mary Jane nitrogen actually ranges from 360 to 1360 ppb and averages 812 ppb.  Algae populations, as measured by the chlorophyll concentration in the water, are low to moderately high, increasing as nutrient levels increase, ranging from only 3 to 31 ppb and averaging 7 ppb.  Water clarity, as measured by the depth to which a standardized 'secchi' disc can be seen when lowered into the water, is fair to good as a result of low algae levels, ranging from 3 to 10 feet and averaging 6 feet.
