May 8, 2008
On May 8, 2008 staff from Highlands Soil and Water Conservation District put on a Water Conservation/Home Composting Workshop. It was well attended and the agenda included two Power Point presentations, special guest speaker, Sara May from Okeechobee, sharing of information by Earth Team volunteers, refreshments and door prizes. It was a success and many low-flow shower heads were given away and over 50 composting kits were sold.

Home Composting Workshop
November 29, 2007
On November 29, 2007 from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., the Highlands Soil and Water Conservation District hosted a home composting workshop at the Agri-Civic Center at 4505 George Blvd. in Sebring.
Staff taught homeowners and citizens how to build the frame for the 55 gallon barrel, which was supplied to participants of the workshop. Coffee and refreshments were available upon arrival, followed by an informative Power Point presentation on the benefits of composting. After the presentation, guests went outside to learn how to build a frame for their barrel. Erin McCarta, Lakes Management Technical Assistant and Corine Burgess, Natural Resource Specialist, instructed participants and built a frame on site. Instructions were handed out and brochures on the “how to’s” of composting were provided for each guest.
Composting saves money, helps plants, saves water and benefits the environment. It also reduces the amount of waste that would normally go to the landfill.
